The Ithaca Cal Ripken 12U Baseball Team followed up a runner-up showing in the 2016 Dunn Field Classic Baseball Tournament two weeks ago with a Championship at the Cal Ripken District 6 Tournament held in West Elmira, NY this past Father’s Day Weekend.
Ithaca Baseball delivered the title after trading the lead four times with West Elmira in the Championship game. Ithaca scored 7 runs on 11 hits, with Tyler Antonyak, David Johnson, Chase Sposito and Kyle Caudill delivering 2 hits each and 5 RBI’s, while John Wiiki cleared the bases with a 3 run homerun in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game 4-4.
Ithaca’s defense held West Elmira scoreless in the remaining 3 innings, behind the battery of pitcher Caudill (80% strikes, 4 K’s and 0 Walks) and catcher Ben Petrich (0 passed balls, no stolen bases allowed), and the outstanding fielding of Tysan Gingerich (2nd base), Elijah Widercrantz(Left Field) , and Garrett Backus (Center Field). Ithaca fielded perfectly during the final three innings, including a key 5th inning double play to put an early end to West Elmira’s hitting threats.
Ithaca took the lead in the fifth inning, with Sposito starting it off with a single to left field. Sposito advanced to third during West Elmira's dropped-third strike run-down of Ithaca's John Wiiki. Ben Petrich followed with a walk. David Johnson singled to third base, plating Chase Sposito for the go-ahead run and advancing Petrich to third. Kyle Caudill followed Johnson with a two RBI single that allowed both Petrich and a fast moving Johnson to score and giving Ithaca its 7th and final run of the game.
Corinna Petrich continued her RBI streak in championship games, delivering 3 critical RBI’s across the Dunn Field Classic and District 6 Championship games. Jackson Yaggie, was on limited play, just returning from the DL list but pulling rank at the plate going .333 for this weekend’s tourney.
The team continues on to the Western New York State Championship, July 7-10 in Jamestown, NY.
